PAUL WANG

Paul is an avid, driven, and philosophical educator of music with the desire to perpetuate classical music and guide the emerging artists of future generations. He follows in the footsteps of his mother, who was a choral director and piano teacher during his early life in Taiwan.

In class around San Diego, Paul brings vast experiences to inspire school orchestra students to elevate their technique and artistry to overcome the demands of the music. Paul has coached at, among others, Valley and Oak Valley Middle Schools, Canyon Crest Academy, and Del Norte, Poway, and Westview High Schools. He has appeared as a guest artist for the Carmel Valley Summer Symphony. In addition, Paul teaches private lessons at the San Diego Music Academy, where he works with students from the age of 6 and older, including adults. Some of his students aspiring to become professional musicians have been accepted or continued music performance studies at Loyola Marymount and Indiana Universities, University of Illinois, and Universities of California, Irvine and Los Angeles.

As a musician, Paul was a member of the La Jolla Symphony and the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra. Prior to that, he joined the San Diego and San Francisco Youth Symphonies and the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Being in orchestra has given him the opportunities to perform at the homes of world class orchestras, including the Berlin and Munich Philharmonics and the San Diego and San Francisco Symphonies. Paul has also collaborated with influential conductors, notably Donato Cabrera, Jahja Ling, Michael Morgan, Alasdair Neale, Scott Sandmeier, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

Paul was born in 1993 and began his musical journey on the piano at the age of 4. In 2001, Paul won an audition to join a class of thirty students, where he started learning the viola as his secondary instrument. In 2004, Paul moved to San Diego and continued his viola studies. In 2011, Paul received a scholarship to enroll at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he continued viola performance studies. Paul has earned both bachelor’s and master’s degree from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Some of his notable mentors are Ji Pei Jie, member of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra; Kai Tang, 3rd prize winner of the 1989 Primrose International Viola Competition; Jodi Levitz, undergraduate teacher and now a professor at the University of Miami; Jonathan Vinocour, graduate teacher and principal of the San Francisco Symphony.
